Achievement

March 2000

As recently appointed sports co-ordinator for Harris Academy, I was immediately impressed by the sporting talent within the school. Achievement in sport at any level is admirable but to be selected for your school, then District and ultimately, your Country, is clearly an honour. In order to achieve this success, both individual and team, pupils have had to work extremely hard and give many hours to training, practice and competition. Some, even at this stage have been selected for elite squads with a view of competing in International Competitions, the Commonwealth Games in 2002 and the Olympics in 2004!

Harris Academy has 20 pupils selected for Scottish squads and many others who have competed in District and Scottish Schools Championships. It is impossible not to be impressed by the range of sporting prowess our pupils have achieved so far. As a school, we should be proud of them and we must continue to give them every encouragement to develop their talents and fulfil their potential.

As newly appointed Sports Co-ordinator at Harris Academy I have been overwhelmed at the sporting talent and achievement of our pupils. Success at any level is admirable but to achieve recognition at District and National standard is a mixture of talent, hardwork and dedication. Some, even at an early stage have been selected for elite squads with a view to competing at International levels. Like, 14 year old Nicola Baird, who has already represented Club, District and Country at swimming and recently joined the National Youth Squad with the Commonwealth Games as her goal.

Hockey player Louise Carroll has played for her District and Country at all age groups levels including U21. She has Captained District and National teams and recently played in Europe taking part in the Eight Nations Competition. She is in the GB Olympic Development Squad for the 2004 and 2008 Olympics and has just been selected to attend the Scottish Institute of Sport, (only 12 places were awarded), for the next 4 years.

Fifth year pupil, Ryan Laird, has played Water Polo since the age of 10 and at 13 represented the Midland District U16 team. He has since Captained the U17 Menzieshill and District Water Polo teams. Ryan plays for Scotland and was recently voted by coaches as the Scottish Junior Water Polo Player of the Year 1999.

Harris Academy has over 20 pupils who have been selected for Scottish National squads. Many others have reached the finals of Scottish Schools Championships like swimming, X-Country and Athletics. Jackie Scott recently won the Scottish Schools Indoor Athletics U16 200m final at Kelvin Hall and has since been selected for an elite training squad. She has run in International events and at the end of February competed in Cardiff where she came 2nd which now places her highly in the GB rankings for her age and 3rd fastest women in Scotland.

In my role, it is important to promote and publicise such success in order to raise public awareness and pupil profile. As a School, we encourage sporting achievement in all areas and at all levels. We work hard in helping all pupils reach their full potential.
