Ross shot an impressive gross score of 71, net 70, to take the honours in the revamped event, which was contested by 16 schools from Fife, Tayside and Angus.

Ross said: 'It was great fun to play the course and I'm delighted to be the overall winner of the Dunhill Links Schools Golf Challenge. I plan to apply to Arizona University for a full golf scholarship.'

Ross took the overall, individual scratch title over the Torrance Course at St Andrews Bay Resort on a sunny, blustery day.

Winners in the four remaining categories were:
Michael Falls, Madras College, winner of the Junior Boys category with eight-under par;
Martyn Scott, Dunfermline High School, winner of the Senior Boys category with five-under par;
Rebecca Wilson, Monifieth High School and Krystle Caithness, Waid Academy won the Junior and Senior Girls respectively.

The competition, played over 18 holes off full handicap, was held in advance of the Dunhill Links Championship, which this year will once again be staged at the Old Course, St Andrews, the Championship course at Carnoustie and Kingsbarns Golf Links from September 29 - October 2.

All participants of the school golf competition will be invited together with their families and a school representative to the final day, where the prize giving will take place. The five winners will also be invited to an exclusive golf clinic, given by renowned golf coach Robert Baker, at the championship practice range on the final Sunday.

Once again the pupils of Harris Academy have achieved success in a multitude of sports. This session has seen success in:

Rugby
Once again our rugby team were invited to represent the City in the annual May day tournament in Orleans. 26 Harris pupils and 10 from a selection of primary schools sailed from Newcastle on
29th April to participate in the U-11, U-13 and U-15 competitions. All of our teams acquitted themselves well against more experienced opposition with our stars being the U-13’s who for the first time in our six years of participation qualified from the morning group to participate in the winners knockout section in the afternoon.

Football
This session has been one of unprecedented success for our footballers.

The U’14 girl’s team also had an outstanding season winning the Coca Cola 7’s competition at Hampden (winning a trip to Barcelona) and the inaugural Dundee School’s S 1/2, 7’s tournament.

Athletics

At the Dundee Schools Athletics Championship, pupils won 12 medals and all pupils performed brilliantly. Well done to everyone.

This has been an outstanding year for both curricular and extra-curricular sport
more pupils are taking part more regularly in class time, we have more sports clubs on offer at lunchtime and after school and more people eager to take part. The PE department’s “Give it a go” philosophy is clearly working and more people are enjoying sporting events. Let’s build on this next session and keep PE and sports a growth area in Harris Academy.
