Nicola Baird has achieved much success in her swimming recently. Competing in the Midland ' A` Grade Championships in May she won 18 Gold medals and the Best Girl Trophy. She competed in Sheffield in the GB Grand Prix where she has proven to be among the best in her age group in her specialist events coming in 2nd or 3rd place. With Scottish Age Groups and Nationals coming up, Nicola still has a lot more to aim for this season. Selected by the S.A.S.A. for the National Youth Squad, Nicola's long-term target is to compete in the Commonwealth Games in 2002. STOP PRESS... Nicola (15) won Bronze in 100m and 200m Breaststroke 15/16 Age Group Championships. Susan
and Jackie Scott took part in the Scottish Schools Athletics Championships on
the 17 - 18th June. Susan ran in the 17 and Over 800m and won Silver with a
new personal best time of 2mins 18 secs. Jackie had a really close race in the
15 - 17 years 200m race losing out to Gold by photo finish. Well done girls on
a great running season and here's hoping you now gain selection to the
Scottish squads for those International meets coming up.
Congratulations to the following pupils on their recent selections to Scottish Squads. Ross
Yarwood U14 Football Ross, since selection, has already played against the Netherlands, The Irish Republic, Wales and Northern Ireland and scored his first International goal! Great Stuff. Craig only recently won his place in the U 16 squad during a weekend area tournament played in Grangemouth. Vicki and Louise have just heard of their selections so this hot off the press! To reach Scottish trials is a magnificent achievement in itself. Many pupils have reached District level and from here hope they may move on to the national platform. Pupils like Hannah Lawson, David Johnstone, Ross Eggo and Steven Gauld have been honoured with trials in their chosen squads but this year were not successful. This is not to say they will not succeed in the future and as a school we recognise their successes so far and will support them in their quest next year. Congratulations must also be given to these pupils who have been successful in District Competitions and Team selections this year. Anna
Millar Perth and Kinross Open Age Group Champion Gymnastics Since our last article on Scottish representatives we have since found out that we have other elite sportsmen and women. Rhys Jones in BMX biking and Jackie McColl in ten pin bowling. The depth and breath of sporting ability within the School is amazing! Well clone to Lindsay Duncan in 3rd year for her successes in Ladies Curling this year. She has won 4 Ladies Competitions this season. Daniel Hume in 2nd year represented Scotland in an International Athletics Meet for the Army Cadets this month by competing in the Shot Putt. Harris Academy promotes and supports the development of sport in school. We believe it plays an important part in developing personal pride in performance, self-esteem and respect for others. This year we have tried to give our pupils many sporting opportunities in order to fulfil their potential and individual needs regardless of their level of ability. It is our hope that sport will become an important part of their life and enhance their physical, mental and social well-being. KIM BARLOW (SPORTS CO-ORDINATOR) *Update June 2000* Athletics
