National Award for ex-pupil

A Russian former pupil of Harris Academy has been named international candidate of the year by exam-setting body the Scottish Qualifications Authority.

Faina Shpiro joined the school in 2001 after her father started work at Dundee University.  She obtained eight Standard grades and two Advanced Highers in Russian and French in S4, then went on to add another six Highers and three Advanced Highers during S5 and S6.

A spokeswoman for the SQA said, "The award recognises her immense academic achievements, most of which have been achieved in her second language - English."

The achievements of Dundee schools and their pupils were celebrated at a glittering ceremony in the Caird Hall last night.

The Focus on Achievement Awards recognise the wide spectrum of work which goes on daily in the city's schools and recognise the efforts of pupils individually and the success of school projects in areas such as partnership working, self-esteem programmes, music, sports, citizenship and exam results.

Winners of each category were presented with trophies at the ceremonies with pupils from across the city announcing the winners.  Dozens of entries were received from schools across Dundee and a judging panel, including education experts, academics and journalists chose the winners.
