August 2006

August is always a slow month for news as the school settles down for a new session.  However, this gives the opportunity to catch up on news items from the holiday period.

Harris Pupil Tops Debating

Pupils from Harris Academy in Dundee have taken part in a major UK schools' debating championship - just missing out on first prize.  The Harris debaters took part in the national final of the Institute of Ideas & Pfizer Debating Matters competition held at the Wellcome Trust and Goodenough College in central London.

They were narrowly beaten by Newcastle upon Tyne Church High School in a debate on the motion "Man not machines should explore space", but team member Craig Fairnington received the best individual award for his debating skills and persistently insightful challenges to debaters and expert speakers.

To qualify for the national final, the Harris team battled their way through the Dundee qualifying round at the end of last year and the Scottish regional final held at Royal Society of Edinburgh in March.
