A pupil from Harris Academy in Dundee has scooped the top prize in the 8th Harry McLevy Memorial Awards.

She was today presented with £150 and a trophy to hold for a year, while her school also received £150.

The award is sponsored by Claverhouse Group in recognition of the work Harry McLevy did as a director of the company.

Harry was a senior union official, Scottish secretary of the then Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union and past president of the STUC.

He became involved with Claverhouse in 1988 as a board member and was vice-chairman of the group at the time of his sudden death in December 1995. The firm launched the award in 1998 to mark his great contribution to the development and success of the company.

A competition was developed for 3rd year pupils of modern studies, which required youngsters to research and write a report on an aspect of UK politics or social issues.

Chairman of the board, Tony Jackson, presented the seven school winners with their certificates and £20 each.
