The final cash in Dundee's Harris Academy minibus appeal fund has been secured thanks to the mountaineering efforts of a Dundee man. Alan Douglas embarked on the ambitious venture of climbing nine Cairngorms mountains in three days to raise cash for the fund. He took the challenge because his daughter Michelle (17) had made good use of the old minibus while completing her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. Michelle was due to accompany him on the effort but was forced to return home after falling ill. Bad luck continued to dog the attempt and Alan had to abandon it due to bad weather after scaling four peaks. But thanks to the generosity of friends, family and colleagues at the Milton of Craigie and Perth branches of ASDA, he managed to raise £725, which he handed over to Harris rector James Thewliss and pupils today. A grateful Mr Thewliss said, "The school has been gathering cash since November for the new minibus and the £725 raised by Mr Douglas was the final piece in the jigsaw."
