Fire Destroys Former School
Hundreds of people watched in the street as the former Logie School/Harris Annexe in Blackness Road, Dundee, was destroyed in a spectacular blaze last night. Around 50 firefighters from Tayside and Fife fought a losing battle to control 100-foot high flames which spread rapidly throughout the former school, and could be seen from as far afield as Wormit and Broughty Ferry. Within 30 minutes of the fire being discovered at 9 p.m., around 50% of the roof was ablaze, although at that stage it looked as if the flames would be contained to the east and north of the building and breathing apparatus teams were sent to tackle the fire from inside. However it soon became apparent that flames were racing through the empty roof space to all parts of the building and the firefighters were immediately ordered back out of the school as the night sky lit up again. At 11 p.m. a
poignant reminder of the historical significance of the school, the clock
tower with the hands showing the time at 8 o'clock, disappeared into the
centre of the flames, signalling that the last remaining part of the roof
had collapsed.
