Homework Policy

Rationale

The Homework Group was brought together as a response to the findings of the School Ethos Group.  These findings suggested that pupils, staff and parents all had concerns relating to homework.  The Homework Group’s response was to gather evidence from the three groups and this policy is based on our attempts to overcome the identified difficulties.

We feel that it is important that our work on homework is seen as part of a much wider issue ie that of raising pupil attainment.  If pupils and parents in particular can be convinced of this wider interpretation then some of the practical problems encountered may be overcome more easily.

Definition

Homework – is any task/activity undertaken outwith formal class time which contributes to, reinforces or supports work carried out in class.  It is directed by the teacher, carried out by the pupil and recognised in some way on return to school.  It is intended to benefit the pupil.

Homework Purposes

There are many good reasons why homework is issued.  The list below was constructed as a result of the work carried out by the group during the homework study but is not exhaustive and is not in any significant order.

  • To complete a piece of work begun in class and which allows the next stage of learning to take place.

  • To reinforce work undertaken in class.

  • To support pupils encountering difficulties.

  • To extend more able pupils.

  • To aid revision.

  • To help prepare for an assessment.

  • To encourage good learning habits.

  • To build on knowledge already acquired.

  • To evaluate teaching and learning.

  • To encourage independence.

  • To train pupils how to research.

Types of Task

There are many different types of activity which constitute homework.  It is very important that both pupils and parents are aware that homework consists of more than simply written exercises. Again the list below is not intended to be exhaustive.

  • Questions and Answers

  • Revision for test or assessment

  • Research/Investigation

  • Essay

  • Reading

  • Problem solving
