HM Inspectorate of Education (HMIE) works to improve education in Scotland. HM Inspectors (HMIs) inspect or review the quality of education in pre‑school centres, primary and secondary schools, special schools, further education colleges, community learning, initial teacher education and local authorities. We also inspect the care and welfare of pupils in both day and residential schools. Sometimes we work with other organisations. In pre‑school centres and residential schools we work with the Care Commission. We publish the findings of our inspections in short clear reports and put them on our website. We also identify and promote the good practice we find. We draw on our overall knowledge to provide independent professional advice to the Scottish Ministers, relevant departments of the Scottish Executive and others.
