mathematics
course details S1 and S2
S1
In S
1 Maths, all pupils are placed in mixed ability classes. Based on information
from primary schools, pupils are placed in ability groups within their S 1
classes to do Maths work at an appropriate level.
Resources
used in class include the textbooks Maths in Action 1 and Maths in Action 1 Plus
as well as other commercially produced materials and a variety of school
produced materials. Most work in S 1 is completed without the use of a
calculator. Homework exercises match up with topics being taught in class and
are differentiated to allow for the different levels of work being covered in a
class.
Continuous
assessment is used to provide feedback to pupils, teachers and parents. Testing
over S 1 is used to help determine sections for S2.
S2
Classes
in S2 are set in ability groups. Courses have been designed for C/D, D/E and E/F
levels with extension work available for each group.
Resources
used in class include the textbooks Maths in Action 2 and Maths in Action 2 Plus
as well as other commercially produced materials and a variety of school
produced materials. Some of the work in S2 requires the use of a scientific
calculator and it is advisable for pupils to purchase their own calculator. This
can be done by placing an order with the Maths Department. Homework exercises
match up with topics being covered in class and are differentiated to suit the
level of ability of pupils in each section. Mental arithmetic skills are taught
and tested throughout the S2 course.
Continuous
assessment is used to provide feedback to pupils, teachers and parents. Testing
in S2 is used to help determine sections for Standard Grade courses in S3. As
well as test results, attitude and effort shown in class are also taken into
consideration when new classes are being formed for S3. Close monitoring of
pupil performance allows the department flexibility to make changes to sections
if required.
In
both SI and S2, pupils are encouraged to enter a variety of Maths competitions.
These include the Scottish Mathematical Challenge, the UK Junior Maths Challenge
and Enterprising Maths.
