Unfortunately, the reality was very different. As soon as the artillery fire ceased, the Germans emerged relatively unharmed from their dugouts. The machine-guns were already firing as the first British soldiers emerged, cutting swathes through the attack. As the dead and dying rolled back in to their trenches, more cannon fodder entered the hell of no-man’s land (Fig.5).
