April 10th 1854I'm Linda-Anne and today I'm starting my journey on the Oregon Trail. I'm going with my ma, pa, younger sister, Ann-Marie and my grandma, Betty-Lou. We worked out that our journey was going to take 5 to 6 months and we would be travelling about 2000 miles. We're leaving from Independence and going all the way to Oregon City. For the journey we need a strong wagon and 6 oxen (lucky for us we live on a farm).
In the wagon there is room for food. We're taking flour, bacon, beans, coffee, sugar, lard, vinegar, salt, pepper, rice, yeast powder, hardtack, baking soda, a huge barrel full of water and chickens. We also need to take 2 sets of clothing per person, bedding and a tent, tools and nails, candles and matches, rope, kitchen utensils such as pots and pans, tubs and buckets, shotguns, rifles and gunpowder. It's amazing how many things you can fit into a wagon! I'm quite nervous about the journey but my ma and pa say it will be an exciting experience. April 24th 1854 Well,
we've been on the trail for 2 weeks now and it feels like so much
longer! Every morning we've been up before sunrise so we're all quite
tired. After we get up we all help to yoke our oxen, and then we have
turns about cooking breakfast, this morning it was me. After breakfast
we get back on the trail. Today we're somewhere between Independence and Fort Kearney
and Courthouse Rock. It's going to take another 2 weeks to reach there. The weather has been really nice, it's very sunny but not
too hot so Ann-Marie and I have been walking alongside the wagon. We
sometimes play on the way so we don't get bored. We stop for a break for about an hour, then we set up camp at 6 p.m. This is when Ann-Marie and I look for firewood. Hopefully we're lucky enough to find some without using the alternative buffalo dung! At 9 pm we all go to sleep. |
