13th September 1850 This is the last night we will set up camp on the wagon train. Tomorrow we will reach Oregon. Everyone gathers round the campfire and we have a big feast with all the food we have left. Some of the men play fiddles and we dance and sing late into the night. It is sad that so many people have lost their lives on the wagon train. 14th September 1850 At 4 am the bugle sounded for the last time. Everyone started their daily chores and could not wait to get started on the trail. 5 months after leaving Indiana we have now reached Oregon.
It is different to what I expected. There are three
churches, three stores and two blacksmiths. We stop in Oregon for a day
to shop for food 15th September 1850 At last we have reached the Willamette Valley. This is the end of our trail. We have now found our new home. The farm is 640 acres in size. Father, Jake and I will have to start building a log cabin to live in.
It will be a hard first winter in Oregon but come the
summer after a lot of hard work we will have lots of crops and clean
water to drink. Oregon is a great place to live and I am sure we will
all enjoy our new life together in Oregon. |
