April 21st

Today, we arrived in our wagon from Maryland.  We are here in Joseph, Missouri, and will stay here until there are a suitable amount of wagons ready to go.  Great-Grandpa Fred says that we'll need at least 30 before we set off or else "the dang injuns will be all over us like vultures round a corpse."

We set off today from Joseph on our amazing journey.  We had been told of amazing riches and grasses greener than green.  But something tells me we could be in for more than we bargained for...

Things are going well so far.  We have covered around 100 miles and are still going.  Of course, I have to walk the whole way as Fred is too frail and insists on putting his feet up.  The food is alright.  For breakfast, we have coffee bread and bacon, for lunch we have coffee beans and bacon.  Sometimes, we have buffalo if we're lucky.

The Darneys, one of the other families in the train, have had a bit of wheel trouble.  We were riding through a rough, stony area when the Darneys hit a rock.  The wheel fell clean off and one of the inner pegs has snapped into two. It'll take a few days to fix.

The plague of the broken wheels, it seems, has hit us now.  Spent 7 hours fixing it but are still going.

May 19th

It seems the broken wheel fiasco is behind us as we have covered 30 miles in 2 days.  Food is still good to mediocre but these darn bunions are annoying the *** out of me !

May 26th

A sad day for all of us.  Great Grandpa Fred passed away in the night.  He, says the doctor, died of heartstroke and dehydration.  Fred, you will be with us always.

R.I.P.

Fred Dodson

Age 103

Fred's funeral today.  We are all heartbroken to see him go but know he is going to a better place.  As he put it, "If them injuns start it, you finish it !"  That doesn't make any sense and isn't even relevant to the subject.  That was Fred for you.
