S2 Debating

On Monday 12th November, 4 pupils from each 2nd year fast track class, Birnam and Cawdor with their teacher Mr Dick and Kinloch and Forres with their teacher Mrs Ferguson, debated on the motion of ‘ It is better to be beautiful than clever’.
| For
the Motion (Forres and Kinloch) |
Against
the Motion (Birnam and Cawdor) |
| Daniel Hine (2Kb) | Craig Fairnington (2Bb) |
| Liam Sturrock (2Kb) | Laura Pakes (2Ba) |
| Faye Kennedy (2Fb) | Garry Sturrock (2Bc) |
| Sean MacKay (2Ka) | Lynsay McFarlane (2Ba) |
It was held at lunchtime in the library, and was open for an audience. The debate lasted for about 25 mins and there was an audience of 25-30 people. Both of the teams speeches were very well prepared and delivered, and it was a tough decision at the end for the judge, Mrs Dye, to decide on a winner.
Overall the
proposition Kinloch and Forres had a funnier speech and were louder, whereas the
Birnam and Cawdor class were very experienced and probing. At the end of the
debate the judge, Mrs Dye, thought that the opposition of the motion ‘ It is
better to be beautiful than clever’, the Birnam and Cawdor class, had been
slightly better and had won.
There is word of another debate, but this will take place nearer to Christmas.
It looks as if the Kinloch and Forres class don’t want to accept their defeat,
and wish for a rematch!
Garry Sturrock (2Bc)
