S1

Each year, Young Writers holds a Poetry Odyssey competition with the aim of making reading and writing poetry fun.  In 2001, over 50,000 entries were received nationwide.  The following, by S1 Harris pupils, were considered worthy of publication and have been printed in 2001 : A Poetry Odyssey (Tayside).

THE FLU

I've got the flu
Can hardly speak
My nose has been running all day
My head is thumping
My ears are buzzing
I'm not sure I'll last a day

I'm up on the couch
I'm feeling depressed
Cos I'm not allowed anything to eat
I've got my hot water bottle
Under the quilt
It's great to feel the heat

I've been to the doctors
He gave me some stuff
To try to make me feel better
I don't think it's worked
I've still got a cough
But my nose isn't runny, it's blocked!

THE WITCH

When I am bored and feeling full of gloom
I like to take a whiz on my broom.
I see the sights and see the seas,
That really makes me very pleased.

I think flying is really fun -
It's cool, it's number one.
I hope I'm never seen
Because people will know I'm green.

HAPPINESS

Happiness - what does it mean ?
Happiness - what is that word ?
It sounds so joyful.
I look up at the sunny blue sky
and suddenly I know.
I look at colours of the rainbow
to cheer me up.

HAPPY

I'm going on Holiday to Spain.
Beside all the hot, sandy, beaches,
And the big, blue exotic seas,
The citrus fruits with palm trees,
This all makes me happy.

Pink is my favourite colour,
It is bright and colourful.
It always makes me happy,
When I'm down in the dumps.

A sheep is my favourite animal,
It baas in a field all day,
It chews on grass and leafy bushes,
And gets its fleece shorn every year,
Just looking at them makes me happy.

A SUNNY MORNING

The curtains are opened,
outside the sun is shining in the cloudless blue sky.
I happily take my dog out for a walk,
in the warmth of the morning.
I hear the birds singing sweetly,
nestled in their trees,
the noise of the children merrily playing hide and seek
and the sound of neighbours joking and laughing.

BLISS

Bright, radiant sunshine filled my bedroom,
I yawned and look out of my window.
The birds were whistling sharply,
perched on their branches.
People happily walking their dogs,
laughing and joking merrily together.
The green, sun-soaked grass swayed softly
in the gentle breeze.
I sighed happily and fell back to sleep.
It was the start of the summer holidays!

BECKS

Becks my hamster, she makes me happy
Becks is so cute, so small and white
When I take off the lid she climbs out
Then she walks on to my hands
She runs so fast I can hardly keep up with her
When she's tired she slows down
I put her back in
Then she goes to bed.

THE SHINING STAR

If a star was shining
what would you do?
Would you wish on it?
Would you think about it
or would you ever forget about it?
Wish for peace
or wish for happiness with your heart?
Whatever you wish for, your wish might just come true.

MISERABLE WEATHER

Crackle!  Another streak of lightning struck the isolated tree.
Rumble!  The thunder can be heard across the empty field.
Whoosh! Howling wind blows around the abandoned tractor.
Splash!  Sheets of rain crash down onto the shattered windowpane.
The silence.  Some weather is really miserable.
