Information Systems

| Relational Database Systems | This
new unit involves a very detailed study of relational databases. Beginning with raw
data, it is put into a form suitable for entry into a relational
database. This includes normalising the data to 3rd Normal Form. The databases are created from scratch, interrogated and
reports produced. At each stage the emphasis is on producing
commercially viable products and completion of this unit alone could
lead to a job in this field.

| Using Information | This
new unit involves the study of contemporary information systems
including Management Information Systems, Decision Support Systems and
Expert Systems. The topics include the characteristics of
information, the use of information for decision making, planning,
control and education, how to evaluate an external information source
and the morals and ethics in the use of information systems. There
is also a detailed study of Information Management Software and of the
global implications of ICT. Use is made of the Internet - for research
purposes - during this unit.

| Applied Multimedia | This
is a new highly detailed unit covering everything in the various
stages of the development of a complex multimedia system - and it is
cutting edge in its content. As part of this unit, there is
analysis, design, implementation of systems and testing.

2 Information Systems
|

| Database Systems | This
new unit involves a study of relational database systems - from scratch
- to include their design and creation. It includes normalisation to 1st
normal form.

| Using Information | This
new unit requires pupils to demonstrate Knowledge and Understanding,
Practical Skills and Problem Solving related to Information Systems,
Information Management Software and the implications of ICT.

| Applied Multimedia | This new unit involves a study of aspects of multimedia. It includes analysis, design of all the elements involved, creation, testing and evaluating the result. |
Assessment
All courses have Unit Assessments, Coursework and a Final Examination.
Each unit has both practical and written assessments.
The contribution of the coursework to the final mark varies depending on the level of the course.
For Higher it is 30%
For Int 2 it is 40%
Additional Information
Each unit of each course has both practical and theory work.
Each course gives an automatic award of IT Core Skills at the appropriate level.
There is no programming involved in any Information Systems course.
