Advanced Higher Biology
Course Content
Intermediate
2 is comprised of three 40 hour units: Living Cells, Environmental Biology and
Genetics, Animal Physiology. It develops an understanding of how biological
principles can be applied to the issues facing the individual and society, and
fosters positive attitudes to oneself and others.
Higher is comprised of three 40 hour units: Cell Biology, Genetics and Adaptation, Control and Regulation. These units build on concepts developed in Standard Grade and Intermediate 2. The course reflects the importance of biochemistry, molecular biology and environmental issues in Biology today.
Advanced Higher has two compulsory 40 hour units, a 20 hour investigation and one optional 20 hour unit at the discretion of the teacher. The compulsory units are: Cell and Molecular Biology, Environmental Biology.
Assessment
All
courses require all unit assessments to be passed as well as the external exam.
Three course components are assessed: Knowledge and Understanding, Problem Solving, Practical Abilities.
Advanced Higher Only requires completion of a report on the work carried out on the investigation. This is worth 20% of the final mark.

Please note: It is advisable that pupils have passed Higher Chemistry, as one of the two compulsory units is Biochemistry.
