(Correct at March, 2005)
Course Content
The course is
divided into three inter-related areas – Expressive Activity, Design
Activity and Critical Activity.
In Expressive Activity, pupils investigate a theme and communicate their ideas through drawing, painting or sculpture.
In Design Activity, pupils investigate and research a “real-life” problem posed by a “Design Brief”. The solution, together with research material, and the pupil’s own evaluation of their work is presented for final assessment.
In Critical Activity, pupils consider the work of artists and designers and make a critical response to work studied.
Assessment
Expressive Activity is assessed by examination set by the Scottish Qualification Authority.
Design Activity is produced as part of classwork and is assessed internally (by the Art & Design Department) but is “moderated” by the Scottish Qualification Authority.
Critical Activity is produced as part of classwork and assessed by the Scottish Qualification Authority.
Additional Information
Pupils opting for Standard Grade Art & Design will find the course a demanding one but one which can be immensely rewarding. The course is designed to “offer experiences relevant to pupils’ lives and to encourage pupils to become more visually aware”. Following this course, pupils will not only develop their technical, observational and imaginative skills but also skills in the critical appreciation of the work of artists and designers. All pupils are welcome: the only requirements are enthusiasm, interest and a willingness to work.
